One evening before a Rich Mullins’ concert at Judson years ago, I walked into the bathroom of the lower level of Herrick Chapel. (I bet you have never heard a devotional start out like that before). As I started to walk out, Rich Mullins was walking in. As a musician, worship leader and Christ-follower, I was awestruck at the reality of being in the same bathroom as Rich Mullins, one of the top Christian recording artists of that era. Sadly, Rich died tragically just a few years later from a car accident. While Rich had a lot of unbelievable songs and accomplishments, arguably his number one claim to fame will be his all-time hit song, Awesome God.
That’s what makes my awestruck run-in with Rich so ironic. Rich taught all of Christendom that there really is only one being in the universe that we should be awestruck about and that’s God. Our God is the Awesome God. Do you remember these fantastic verse one lyrics?:
When He rolls up His sleeves
He ain’t just putting on the ritz
(Our God is an awesome God)
There’s thunder in His footsteps
And lightning in His fists
(Our God is an awesome God)
And the Lord wasn’t joking
When He kicked ’em out of Eden
It wasn’t for no reason
That He shed His blood
His return is very close
And so you better be believing that
Our God is an awesome God
Psalm 68:35 says that God is awesome, “You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!” Praise be to God, indeed, for His awesomeness. He ain’t just putting on the ritz, He truly is awesome!
The question is, so what? It’s actually quite easy to say that God is awesome. Try it right now. See, it’s pretty easy and energizing to say. However, the word awesome isn’t quite the same as it used to be. The word was actually called the most over-used word in 2013 by ragan.com, a communications web site. Think of how you have used it in the last week. Compare your usage to God’s greatness. Pretty weak, huh?
But even more important than the usage of the word, the “so what” for me is about my life. Am I living a life that is honoring to an awesome God? Do my lifestyle choices, my relationships, my level of integrity and character reflect and reveal the awesomeness of a truly awesome God. You see it wasn’t for no reason that He shed his blood, and my life really should signal that I am believing that our God is awesome.
My prayer for you is that you will stop right now and mediate on God’s awesomeness. Think of the grace, mercy, forgiveness and favor He has shown to you. Tell him thank you. Praise Him for who He is. Now, ask God to help you live for Him to a larger degree today than you did yesterday and then go do it. He will give you the strength and wisdom, because He is awesome.
